Rey, Cossin, Johnson and Brown finish top-10 at invitational

BEMUS POINT — Newfane took home both the boys and girls meets at the Red Dragon Invitational at Bemus Point Golf Course.

The Fredonia boys finished fourth overall, Gowanda and Dunkirk followed in 11th and 12th place.

For the girls, Silver Creek finished third overall followed by Fredonia and Gowanda in eighth and 14th places.

Top finishers for the Fredonia boys were: Diego Rey (No. 3, 17:06), Josh Johnson (No. 5, 17:15), (Alec Schrader (No. 24, 18:14); Peter Calanni (No. 52, 19:18) and Kevin Redfield (No. 65, 19:41).

“Diego Rey, Josh Johnson and Alec Schrader all ran personal bests today,” Fredonia coach Carol Zirkle said. “They showed a lot of growth this past season and we are very happy with their performances. Chris Anear improved his time significantly from last season. He ran very strong today.”

Top finishers for the Fredonia girls: Emily Brown (No. 9, 20:03), Savanna Lashbrook (No. 24, 21:49), Anna Buchanan (No. 33, 22:32), Ashley Holt (No. 65, 24:37) and Ashlyn Ambrose (No. 66, 24:38).

“Our top three girls also ran very strong,” Zirkle said. “A top-10 finish is always impressive from Emily Brown. Savanna Lashbrook, this is her second cross country race. She looked stronger than we expected. We expect to see great things from her in the future.”

For the Silver Creek boys: Riley Wilson (No. 60, 19:28), John McDaneld (No. 90, 20;31), Alex Bogosian (No. 133, 22:40), Sean Merchant (No. 140, 23:05) and Ryan Rocque (No. 141, 23:10).

For the Lady Black Knights: Jaylah Cossin (No. 4, 19:53), Daisy League (No. 26, 21:50), Ellen Decker (No. 28, 22:06), Juliana Flick (No. 31, 22:38) and Julia Kennedy (No. 37, 22:38).

“Anytime a girl runs under 20 (minutes) this early in the season is quite the accomplishment,” Silver Creek coach Mike Janisch said on Cossin’s performance.

For the Dunkirk boys: Anthony Ruiz (No. 8), Efrain Santiago (No. 55), Ethan Yannie (No. 59), Nelson Rosario (No. 72) and Jared Golowniak (No. 97).

Julia Fred was the top finished for the Lady Marauders at No. 49 with a time of 23:41.

For the Gowanda Panthers: Lyle Warrior (No. 11), Andrew Kruszka (No. 71), Jacob Monat (No. 87) and Christian Cook (No. 87). For the girls: Kristine Twoguns (No. 61, 24:10), Kayla Frothman (No. 75, 25:35), Aurora Bartlett (No. 76, 24:40), Elise Forbes (No. 77, 25:40) and Kala Farley (No. 79, 25:42).

Fredonia’s next cross country meet is Tuesday at Lake Erie State Park. Silver Creek next meet is at Breezewood in Falconer on Tuesday.
