Dunkirk High School’s tennis team split a doubleheader with Cassadaga Valley on the DHS courts Friday afternoon. The visiting Cougars took the first match, 3-2, but Dunkirk won the second match, also by a 3-2 score.

Dunkirk’s first doubles team of Ryan Wills and Joseph Newton won twice, beating Brooke Repine and Kaitlyn Dahl, 10-6, in both matches.

In the opening match, Cassadaga Valley’s Nate Maze beat Dunkirk’s Jordan Cooley, 10-4, while Dunkirk’s Shaun Kelly defeated Blake Dahl, 10-5 and the Cougars’ Katrinah Brett bested Jeremy Bohn, 10-3. The second doubles match saw Cailean Woods and Dana Wilson of Cassadaga Valley top Dominic Begier and Zachary Ardillo, 10-7.

The second match saw Cooley get revenge for his opening loss to Maze with a 10-7 victory over him. Blake Dahl turned the tables on Kelly, beating him 10-8, while Brett picked up another win over Bohn, this time by a 10-2 score. Begier and Ardillo won the second doubles for Dunkirk, outscoring Woods and Wilson, 10-5.

“This was a great day for tennis. No rain, no snow, we started the night in the 50s,” Dunkirk coach Allie Saye said. “Both teams were obviously evenly matched. They have only four returning players, we have only two. The calls were good, the tennis was fun to watch — right down to the last match (Jordan vs. Nate) which to determine the second match (winner). Cassadaga is a great team to play, and we had a good time. We wish them well in their remaining season.”
