Dunkirk softball tops MG

The Dunkirk Lady Marauders softball team closed its regular season Friday with a 13-3 win over Maple Grove.

The Lady Red Dragons managed just four hits against Dunkirk, which ended its CCAA West 1 schedule at 9-3 (12-7 overall). Ashley Gotowka pitched the first four innings for the Lady Marauders, allowing two runs, two hits and a walk and striking out two batters. Monica Pokoj pitched the last three innings for Dunkirk, giving up a run on two hits and a walk, with three strikeouts.

Emilee Hanlon hit a grand slam for Dunkirk. Emma Newton had three hits and Jessica Beehler and Kaitlyn Davis each had two hits with a double.

Meghann Nolan had two singles for Maple Grove (5-7).

“It was a good team victory. A good win right before the playoffs,” Dunkirk coach Michelle Gilmour said. “Defensively, we were better. We cleaned up our mistakes from the past several games, which was good. So we are looking forward to the postseason.”

CLYMER 4, BROCTON 2 (10 INNINGS)

BROCTON — The Brocton Lady Bulldogs lost a tough one to end the regular season on Friday in a CCAA Division 2 West high school softball game at Brocton High School.

Brocton (6-7, 4-6) trailed 1-0 after a throwing error on a pickoff at third base led to a run for Clymer in the top of the second inning. The game remained at 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh inning.

Makayla Vacanti beat out a pinch-hit single to start a seventh inning rally. She advanced to third base on a double by Jen Potter, then came across to score on an RBI single by Juli Smith to tie the game. Brocton wound up leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.

The game stayed tied until the 10th inning. Brocton allowed three runs across in the inning, but was only able to answer with one run in the bottom half of the inning.

Each pitcher threw a complete game on Friday. Megan Gloss of Brocton tallied 12 strikeouts, while Erica Gustafson of Clymer had 11, with only one walk.

Brocton’s regular season is finished. Now the Lady Bulldogs await a playoff matchup next week.

NORTH COLLINS 15, PINE VALLEY 4

NORTH COLLINS — The North Collins Lady Eagles won a game over CCAA East 1 rival Pine Valley (2-10, 0-9) that got shortened to five innings.

Rebecca Cyrek pitched the whole game for North Collins (11-4, 8-2), giving up just three hits, two earned runs and a walk while striking out two batters.

A slew of hitters had two hits for the Lady Eagles. Cyrek was 2 for 3 with a double and a triple, two runs scored and three runs batted in. Rebecca Holmes went 2 for 4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI. Morgan Mathis went 2 for 3 with two RBI and scored a run. Alexa English and Bella Williams were both was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Emily Winter was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.

North Collins plays Monday at Springville in its last regular season game. Pine Valley plays at home today against Ellicottville to close its CCAA East 1 schedule.
