Gowanda track upsets Olean

GOWANDA — The Gowanda Central School varsity track & field team upset visiting Olean, 71-70, Monday night at Hillis Field. The Panthers had not won a dual meet in several years and now have four victories this season.

With Olean leading 70-66, Gowanda’s 4 x 400 meter relay team of Noah Vogtli, Jake Monat, Lyle Warrior and Nate Brawdy ran their best race of the season to pull out the one point victory. Brawdy also won the 800 meter run and anchored the victorious 4 x 800 relay team. Lyle Warrior was also part of that relay team along with Harry Kaus, Jr. and Dominik Rodriguez.

Freshman Sam Chmielewski was a double winner as he crossed the finish line first in the 1600 and 3200 meter run. Ture Hassler won the shot put with a season best heave of 42′ 5″. Andrew Musacchio (discus), Austin Jankowski (110 meter high hurdles) and Jake Monat (400 meter dash) were the other first place winners for Gowanda.

“We only have 16 athletes on the squad so it took a total team effort to pull off the upset,” said Gowanda’s second year track coach, Mark Benton.

Gowanda is back in action this Friday at the CCAA championship meet at Southwestern.
