Jamestown Classic: DHS tops area teams

JAMESTOWN — Several local high school track teams competed in the Jamestown Track and Field Classic at the Joseph Paterniti Memorial Strider Field Friday afternoon, and there was a ton of talent highlighted throughout the event in which 17 schools competed.

The Dunkirk boys placed fourth with 55.5 points, followed by Fredonia (52), and Chautauqua Lake (9). The Dunkirk women finished fifth, racking up 44 points, followed by Fredonia (43.5), Chautauqua Lake (11), and Silver Creek (10).

Some might say track and field is considered an individual sport opposed to a team sport. However, Dunkirk High School’s relay teams might say otherwise. The Dunkirk girls 4X400 relay team comprised of Sierra Jacques, Julia Fred, Jericha Petrella, and Emilee Hanlon stole the event with a time of 4:20.80. Dunkirk wasn’t done there either, as the boys and girls teams swept the 4X100 relay reaces. Petrella, Hanlon, Octavia Porter, and Jessica Beehler took the girls’ race with a time of 52.19 while the boys’ team of Jonah Rosas, Devin Eddy, Nelson Rosario, and Issiah Velez took first with a time of 45.36.

Fredonia had success in the relay events as well, as the girls took third in the 4X400 meter relay and the boys took third as well in the 4X100 meter relay.

Dunkirk senior Issiah Velez had a solid day. Aside from the 4X100 relay victory he took with his teammates, Velez won another pair of events. He took the boys’ 100-meter race with a time of 11.42 and grabbed first in the long jump with a distance of 20 feet six inches. Velez’s relay teammate, Devin Eddy, placed third in the long jump event with a length of 19 feet 10.5 inches.

The girls’ 100 was won by Fredonia senior Lydia Lanski with a time of 16.23.

Moving on to high jump, Fredonia senior Claire Stokes jumped an even five feet to beat the field. Chautauqua Lake jumper Sydney Lachajczyk placed fourth with a jump of four feet eight inches.

Dunkirk’s Emilee Hanlon took the girls’ 200 meter dash with a time of 26.67 while Fredonia’s Fotini Landis placed fourth with 27.94.

The long distance races had some of the tighter finishes of the afternoon. Sophomore Emily Brown of Fredonia edged out a victory in the 2,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 7:33.52, winning by just .12 seconds.

Fredonia’s Joshua Johnson and Dunkirk’s Anthony Ruiz battled to the finish in a pair of races. Johnson placed third in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:30.72 while Ruiz finished just a second behind him for fourth place. On the other hand, Ruiz placed second in the 3200 while Johnson finished third just two seconds behind.

Junior Diego Rey of Fredonia had a nice day too, collecting a second place finish in the boys’ 800 and a third place finish in the boys’ 1600.
