North Collins beats Clymer in playoffs

OBSERVER Staff Report

NORTH COLLINS — The North Collins Eagles softball team defeated Clymer in the Class D quarterfinals Monday by a score of 10-2.

It was a tight ballgame through four innings as Clymer has jumped out in front to a 2-1 lead behind a couple of hits thanks to Emikala Einink and Kate Honey. However, when the game transitioned to the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Eagle’s bats came alive.

The Eagles struck for nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined, blasting four home runs in the process. Alexa English, Morgan Mathis, DeAnna Wilson, and Baylee Romano all hit home runs to lead the charge.

“They’ve told me all season, when one person gets a hit, they all do,” said head coach Jan Warren. “Once they get through the lineup once or twice they all hit.”

That was certainly the case Monday as the Eagles were held to just one hit through four innings, before bursting out 11 hits in the fifth and sixth.

Rebecca Cyrek had another great game on the mound, as she threw a complete game striking out seven batters, giving up six hits and only the two earned runs.

“[Rebecca] likes to be in control in the circle,” said Warren. “She hits her spots, she changes speeds and keeps hitters off balance. She also knows if the ball is put in play, her defense is going to make the play.”

Opposing Cyrek was Clymer’s Erica Gustafson, who threw all seven innings while striking out four.

North Collins will travel to Forestville Thursday night in a class D semifinal matchup. Warren says he’s confident in his team while also citing that his team defeated Forestville earlier in the season at the Silver Creek tournament, 6-0.

“Our defense is awfully good,” said Warren. “They’re going to have to hit to beat us.”

The first pitch on Thursday is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. at Forestville High School.
