Fredonia defeats Dunkirk, 4-1, 4-1, for league sweep

The Fredonia Lady ‘Billies tennis team completed a clean sweep of the league this season, finishing off the league schedule with a 4-1, 4-1 doubleheader win over Dunkirk on Thursday at Fredonia High School.

Fredonia (8-0) swept Dunkirk in the singles matches in both halves of the doubleheader. Bernie Gens, Alicia Kluck and Selin Arnavut won singles matches in each match for Fredonia. The Lady ‘Billies’ doubles team of Marissa Burr and Mackenzie Crandall won both halves of the doubleheader, as well.

For Dunkirk, the first doubles team of Zoe Loeb and Whitney Hice won both halves of the doubleheader for Dunkirk’s only wins on the day. The pair defeated Nicole Cosico and Leigha Hoisington of Fredonia in both matches in the tightest contests of the day. Dunkirk’s duo won the first match 11-9 and the second 10-7.

Isabella Surma put up Dunkirk’s toughest fight of the singles matches, with a 10-7 loss to Alicia Kluck in the first singles match of the second contest.

“I am very proud of this team,” said Fredonia coach Lisa Johnston. “The singles players went 8-0 not dropping a set all season. Congratulations to Bernie Gens, Alicia Kluck and Selin Arnavut for their success.”

Bernie Gens and Alicia Kluck will represent Fredonia at the County Singles Championships on Wednesday at the Lakewood YMCA.
