Decker led the way for local runners at Sunset Stampede

IRVING — Dunkirk, Fredonia and Silver Creek all competed at the Sunset Stampede on Friday at Evangola State Park, but it was Silver Creek’s star runner who stole the show.

Silver Creek’s Ellie Decker finished in second place in the girls race on Friday, while her team finished second, as well.

Decker led Silver Creek with a time of 20:36, in a race where she ran in third all the way until the last 100 yards, where she burst ahead to claim second, according to Silver Creek head coach Mike Janisch.

It wasn’t all Decker on Friday for the Black Knights, however, as Juliana Flick finished sixth overall for the girls in 21:02.

“Juliana Flick had an outstanding race,” said Janisch. “She passed four people in the last mile.”

Daisy League (22:18), Melanie Wilson (22:42), Lily League (23:50), Emma Romanik (24:04) and Amber Lockwood (24:59) rounded out the second place team, which was only beaten by a much larger school, Orchard Park.

For the Silver Creek boys, Gabe Rhodes led the way with a time of 19:00, while Riley Wilson wasn’t far behind at 19:27. Both runners placed in the top 50. Josh Bunnell (21:26), Sebastian Dole (23:06) and Ian Szymanek (29:55) rounded out the Silver Creek runners on Friday.

For Fredonia, the boys were led by TJ Stokes with a time of 20:25. Avery Willebrandt was closely behind, with a time of 20:38. Brenden Nero was next for Fredonia in 21:05, while Caleb Gornikiewicz (21:18), Jake Davis (22:26), Williams Prevet (24:01) and cedric Howard (25:07) rounded out the Hillbillies on Friday. For the girls, Jessica Parker (29:14) and Maddie Abate (35:02) ran for Fredonia, while the team was incomplete.

“TJ Stokes and Avery Willebrandt both had good races,” said Fredonia coach Tom Stokes. “TJ has really put together a couple of great efforts the last two meets and seems to be getting better each time out.”

Dunkirk ran in its final race before the championship season starts next week by competing at the Sunset Stampede on Friday night.

“It was picture perfect weather for a cross country meet,” said Dunkirk head coach Adam Woelfle.

The Dunkirk boys started off with another strong performance by Anthony Ruiz, taking 10th in 17:37.

“It was a tough race up front with some strong Class A teams, but (Ruiz) did his best to stay up with the pack,” said Woelfle.

Ruiz’s teammates Ethan Yannie (60th) and Efrain Santiago (65th) supported Ruiz on Friday. Matt Hanlon was next in 99th and Miracle Berakah came in 146th. Dunkirk was able to finish 15th as a team.

The Dunkirk girls were led by Jericha Petrella once again, coming in 11th, with Sierra Jacques in 23rd. Gabby Hart was 101st and Yuribeth Castro was 103rd.

“The girls all ran solid strong races,” said Woelfle. “Although the weather was ideal for an October evening, the ground was not as favorable. I give them all credit for fighting through the mud and finishing strong, with or without shoes at the end.”

Dunkirk will now travel to Bemus Point for the county championship next Friday.

Starting at $3.50/week.
