TONAWANDA — The North Collins Eagles put together a full 80 minutes en route to a 2-0 convincing victory over the Ellicottville Eagles to claim the Class D crown on Friday night.

“Last week, we played hard for a half,” said North Collins coach Jay Walters. “We talked this week about creating the same type of play and we did that by competing at our highest level.”

The first half was scoreless with North Collins (8-8-1) controlling a majority of the possession. The Eagles had a great opportunity 15 minutes into the game when Nick Woronowski’s free kick was perfectly placed on net, but Ellicottville’s goalie, Jamison Caldwell, came through with the stop. Shortly after, AJ Puntillo’s shot from the short corner granted North Collins a corner kick.

Ellicottville’s (10-7-1) best opportunities came in the last 10 minutes of the first half. Mike McGuire had a shot within the box that was saved by Michael Warsaw. Ellicottville had another chance prior to half, but Warsaw came out of the net to get the ball.

“Nick Woronwski was a solid defender,” Walters added. “He always keeps the defense strong, remaining in position and making it difficult for the opponents. He is a great competitor.”

North Collins picked up the intensity in the second half and scored a goal two minutes in. Jackson Mathis had a perfectly placed through ball to Alex Tejiera who found the back of the net.

“Alex has been on a roll for us lately,” stated Walters. “His confidence has picked up and he continues to play aggressive, looking for his chances.”

North Collins continued to keep up the pressure with many quality chances on net. In the 59th minute, Brody Klawinski sent the ball up field where Dominic Geberhardt was able to use his speed for a breakaway that he buried into the corner of the net. North Collins dropped its defense and won the battle to the ball to preserve the victory.

“North Collins totally outplayed us today,” said Ellicottville coach Matt Finn. “They wanted it more and did better in every area. It was a well earned victory for them.”

Michael Warsaw came through with big saves and played as an extra defender getting the ball up the field.

“These were perfect conditions for him,” Walters added. “He was able to wrap up the ball nicely before Ellicottville had any opportunities to do damage.”

North Collins plays next on Friday night against the Section V champion that will be determined on Tuesday night.
