Fredonia has trio named to CCAA West Division first team

Fredonia's Laurel Erick

The 2018 CCAA West Division girls soccer all-star teams were released this week, and with it, a trio of Fredonia Hillbillies were named to the first team.

Seniors Laurel Erick and Hannah Sellari along with junior Ella Gould were all honored to the first team, as they helped get Fredonia to the Class B2 finals before they got beat by league champion Allegany-Limestone.

“It’s a loaded league,” said Fredonia head coach Brett Gould. “Allegany-Limestone finished first and went to the final four in the state just a year after winning states in Class C.”

To put it into perspective, this league carried the top three goal scorers in all of Section VI. Also as first team all-stars, Olean’s Calista Heister and Alyssa Spring were first and second in goals scored this season, and following behind them was Erick in third, who scored 27 goals and tallied 12 assists for the Hillbillies in her final campaign.

“Three out of the seven teams in our league made it to sectional finals in Allegany-Limestone, Olean and us,” said Gould. “Olean ended up winning the B1 championship.”

Sellari and Gould were both big factors for the Hillbillies, anchoring down the back end of the defense while controlling the pace of play. They each were able to score one goal on the year as defensemen.

Fredonia was also able to add a couple of players to the second team list. Juniors Kazlin Beers, Kelly Gullo and Caelin Holt were all honored. Gullo was great in goal for the Hillbillies this season, making 124 saves on the season. Beers scored one goal and added four assists for Fredonia.

Other local teams also earned some honors on the second team as Chautauqua Lake’s freshman Lex Jacobson and Dunkirk’s goalkeeper Kymilondjra Nance were honored on the list.

Nance saw lots of shots this season, and made a whopping 284 saves on the season.

“There’s a ton of talent league wise,” said Gould. “Any of these kids being named is a pretty special honor. Of course, they all became all-stars with the support of their teams.”

Fredonia’s Paige Supkoski and Emily Timmerman were listed as honorable mentions along with Chautauqua Lake’s Hailey Roush and Dunkirk’s Erica Rojas.

The CCAA West also honors an individual from each team with a sportsmanship award. Winning for Fredonia was Ella Gould, Chautauqua Lake was won by Becca Henry and Dunkirk was won by Arianna Quinones.
