Fredonia swim wins at Panama

Fredonia's Bill Osuna.

PANAMA — The Fredonia boys swim team opened their season with a win on Thursday, defeating Panama in the pool 98-76 at Panama High School.

For Fredonia, Bill Osula picked right up where he left off last season, winning both the 100 yard butterfly and the 100 backstroke for the Hillbillies. Matt Brockelbank won the 200 IM for Fredonia will Finn Frerichs finished just behind him in second place.

Fredonia was able to make pace in the relays on Thursday, winning the 200 medley relay with Frerichs, Brockelbank, Osula and Ronan Murphy. The Hillbillies also won the 400 freestyle relay with Osula, Murphy, Connor Donahue and Nick Wittmaher.

“They won a few more individual events than we did, but our depth helped us,” said Fredonia coach Bob Ball. “Our fourth and fifth place points really made the difference and having our numbers up this year, we out numbered them 24 to 12, that helped.”

Fredonia also had a couple of swimmers claim personal bests on Thursday, including Aaron Pacos in the 500 freestyle and Ronan Murphy in the 100 butterfly.

The Hillbillies (1-0) will return to the pool Tuesday when they travel to Dunkirk.
