Since the former Dunkirk/Fredonia boys swim team has separated, the two schools faced each other for the first time on Tuesday. Fredonia had the clear advantage, with a 105-34 win over rival Dunkirk.

“Well, obviously we weren’t much of a challenge, since we have only six guys to their 24,” said Dunkirk head coach Allie Saye. “But my guys did well in what they did swim.”

Dunkirk’s “event of the night,” according to Saye, was Adam Fred’s first place finish in the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:58.96. It was the first time Fred broke the six minute mark.

For Fredonia, Bill Osula was a double-winner in individual contests, with wins in the 50 freestyle (22.71) and the 100 backstroke (59.11). Matthew Brockelbank was also a double-winner individually, with wins in the 100 freestyle (56.12) and 100 breaststroke (1:13.97). Ronan Murphy won the 100 butterfly (1:05.54), Tyler Donahue won the 200 freestyle (2:07.66) and Finn Frerichs won the 200 IM (2:27.81).

Fredonia swept the relay events on the night. In the 200 medley relay, Frerichs, Brockelbank, Murphy and Osula took the win in 1:56.10, while Brockelbank, Murphy, Nick Wittmeyer and Donahue won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:44.28. Donahue, Wittmeyer, Frerichs and Osula won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:59.73.

“We had quite a few kids do really well. The biggest positive out of tonight was that all of our times are dropping,” said Fredonia head coach Bob Ball.

Fredonia is in action next on Thursday at home against Olean.
