Hillbillies find success on mats

OBSERVER Staff Report

SALAMANCA — The Fredonia Hillbillies wrestling team took part in the Southern Tier Wrestling Officials Association Holiday Classic, on Saturday, at Salamanca high school. Despite traveling with a light roster, the Hillbillies found some success on the mats.

The ‘Billies saw an impressive performance from eighth grader Lucas Hoffman, wrestling at 106 pounds. Hoffman was a finalist, eventually losing to David Ball of Gowanda by pinfall.

“He had two solid wins to enter the finals, including a pin over the No. 1 seed,” said Fredonia coach Joe Santilli. “I am really pleased with his progress. He is starting to find his way and really competing well.”

Hunter Larson (145) went 3-2, which included two wins via pinfall and the other coming from a 11-6 decision. Antonio Pagan (126) went 2-2, finding both of his wins by way of pinfall, including a pin 57 seconds into the first round.

Fredonia also saw Cole Golembieski (152) and Alex Christy (195) earn victories.

The Hillbillies are back in action Wednesday when they host Gowanda.
