Indoor track season opens for local area high schools

BUFFALO — The indoor track season kicked off with the Varsity B meet on Friday night at Buffalo State University. This is a meet to really see what the newcomers have to offer with the rest of indoor season being a primarily varsity only sport with no jv or modified. Dunkirk/Silver Creek and Fredonia all had some positive results.

For the boys, Dunkirk/Silver Creek’s Ethan Yannie took third in the 60p running a 1:39.8 while teammate Jesus Cuervas took eighth in 1:50.0. Yannie also took eighth in the 300 running a 44.19.

For Fredonia, Andrew Kennedy had a nice night, winning the 55 dash with a time of 7.22 as well as the 300 with a time of 41.76. In the field events, Rian Budzinski won the long jump.

The 4×4 relay of Cuervas, Josh Bunnell, Alex Procknal, and Lucas Lawrie took seventh, and the 4×2 of Felix Garcia, Alex Nytz, Jacob Crino, and Yannie took sixth.

On the girls side, for Dunkirk/Silver Creek, the top finishers were Katie Castaglia in the 55 taking fourth in 8.37 while teammate Chloe Vecchio in eighth. In the 1000, Mia Piede took third in 4:13.9. In the 1500, Julia Kennedy took second in 5:56.2 and Yuribeth Castro took fourth in 6:24.5.

In the 4×8 relay Castro, Kennedy, Siera Porpiglia, and Piede took first in 12:44.1. The 4×4 of Romanick, Vecchio, Kennedy, and Alisha Burgos took fifth.

For Fredonia, Ashlyn Ambrose won the 600 with a time of 1:58.90.

“Today we had a number of good performances from our younger athletes,” said Fredonia coach Thomas Stokes. “We look forward to them continuing to improve as the season progresses.”

The varsity season kicks off next Saturday at Houghton College.
