Blue Devils swept by Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh used a fourth-quarter surge to power past Fredonia, 64-57, in women’s college basketball action on Friday. The Devils fall to 3-2 in the SUNYAC, and 6-6 overall. They were led by Katie Pitcher with 14 points and eight rebounds. Anna Chiacchia went for 10 points and five boards. Jenna Einink (Westfield/Chautauqua Lake) added nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds, with four blocks.

With the Devils up 52-51 and just over six minutes remaining, the Cardinals went on a 12-1 run to take command of the game. With Fredonia down by 10 inside the final minute, back-to-back layups by Rae White (North Collins/Lake Shore) and Sydney Turley made it a six-point game, but the Devils would not get any closer.

The game was close throughout. The Devils led 17-16 after one quarter, before Plattsburgh led 34-32 at the half. Both teams scored 13 points in the third before Plattsburgh’s run would prove to be the difference.

The Cardinals (2-4 SUNYAC / 5-8 overall) were led by Taylor Durnin with 28 points. Ly’rell Walker and Theresa Quinn added 11 apiece.

Fredonia shot 41 percent from the floor compared to Plattsburgh’s 34 percent. The Cardinals outshot the Devils 6-2 from three-point land to help make up the difference.

Fredonia mens team falls, 92-71

PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State dropped Fredonia, 92-71, in SUNYAC men’s basketball action on Friday. Bediako Nyasa led the Devils with 13 points and four assists. Kadeem Riddick added 12 points.

Plattsburgh shot 49 percent from the floor and went to the foul line 46 times to aid its offensive effort. They outrebounded the Devils 50-40. Fredonia shot 35 percent from the floor and made 17 trips to the line. They did shoot a nifty 44 percent (10 of 23) from long range. Nyasa led Fredonia with three treys.

The host Cardinals jumped out to a 12-3 lead to start the game. A 9-0 run that ended at the 11:45 mark of the first half saw Plattsburgh lead 31-11. The Devils outscored the Cards the remainder of the half, and would trail 46-36 at the break.

Messiah Hill had a team-high seven rebounds for the Devils.

Jonathan Patron led Plattsburgh (5-1 SUNYAC / 11-2 overall) with 20 points.

The Devils (1-4, 1-10) visit Potsdam today.
