Fredonia tops Dunkirk, turns eyes towards class, sectionals

Although the wrestling season is winding down for most teams, it’s just getting started for the Fredonia Hillbillies.

While other teams see the class, sectional and state meets just above the horizon, Fredonia continues to take it one match at a time.

The Hillbillies capped off their CCAA Div. 1 league play on Wednesday, defeating the Dunkirk Marauders, 72-12 at Fredonia High School.

“Tonight was the last time our four seniors (Gio Russo, Maggie Mignoli, Jamison Horch, Brandon Wallace) got to step out on that mat,” said Fredonia head coach Joe Santilli. “I’m proud of all of them and what they’ve accomplished here.”

With Dunkirk sporting such a depleted roster this season, the meet only featured four matches, while the rest were decided by forfeits.

Jack Storm (182), Alex Christy (195), Jake Skinner (220) and Lucas Hoffman (106) all picked up pins for the Hillbillies in the four matches wrestled.

As the class meets are just two weekends away, Coach Santilli just wants his guys to look towards the next meet, which is the individual pool tournament at Catt./Little Valley this weekend.

“We had a couple of days off this weekend and sometimes it’s good to have a little break,” said Santilli, referring to the canceled Section VI Dual meets this past Saturday. “You don’t look past the next competition, but we are gearing towards the Class B tournament, which is going to be a lot of fun.”

Plenty of wrestlers are going to get their chances over the next couple of weeks and weekends, because once the Class meets come around — it’s do or die.

The Class B meet will take place at Cheektowaga High School on Feb. 2.
