Class C swim prelims held, Osula qualifies for states

BUFFALO — Four local swimmers earned No. 1 seeds at the Section VI Class C Swimming & Diving prelims on Thursday at Erie Community College’s Burt Flickinger Athletic Center.

Fredonia/Cassadaga Valley’s Bill Osula captured the top spot in the 50 freestyle (22.10) and 100-yard backstroke (56.42). In the process, Osula also qualified for States on Long Island for the 50 freestyle.

Fredonia’s Ronan Murphy will race the 100 butterfly as the No. 7 seed while Matt Brockelbank will race the 200 IM as the No. 8 seed.

Fredonia’s 200 medley relay team consisting of Osula, Brockelbank, Murphy and Brad LaGrow will be seeded No. 5 for today;s meet.

Panama/Chautauqua Lake/Maple Grove’s Austin Strong won a pair of events, taking the 200-yard freestyle in a school-record time of 1:52.48 and the 100-yard freestyle in 51.05.

Frewsburg/Southwestern’s Gannon Moore claimed the No. 1 seed in the 2:14.01 and teammate Zach Gifford was first in the 500 freestyle in 5:17.02.

Panama/Chautauqua Lake/Maple Grove also locked down the top spot in the 200 freestyle relay as Strong, Eathan Johnson, RJ Helt and Elliot Johnson won with a time of 1:35.30.

Earning No. 2 seeds were Gifford in the freestyle, Helt in the 200 individual medley, Elliot Johnson in the 50 freestyle, Moore in the 100 backstroke.

Panama/Chautauqua Lake/Maple Grove’s Elliot Johnson, Helt, Jake Carlson and Strong were second in the 400 freestyle relay.

No. 3 seed times were turned in by Frewsburg/Southwestern’s Cooper Thomas in the 200 freestyle and Eathan Johnson in the 100 breaststroke.

The Class C finals will take place today at City Honors High School.
