Silver Creek, Gowanda cheer teams have strong seasons

The Silver Creek coed competitive cheerleading team recently had its biggest week ever after a season of hard work, bringing home wins and making their school and community proud.

Their motto for the season is “small-town team, big-time dream” and Coach Tami Faraci says they are having a dream season as far as high school teams go.

The team, which is comprised of athletes in eighth through twelfth grade, started with 19 members and are now down to 16 with losses to injuries and other occurrences. However, with every loss the team finds a way to come back stronger than ever. A cheer team gets two minutes and 30 seconds to impress a panel of five judges in the areas of stunting, tumbling, dance, jumps and overall impression. There are no second chances , no second, third or fourth quarters to make up for mistakes made. This team has embraced that and gone on to take home several impressive wins.

The cheerleaders traveled to Bath on Jan. 12, where they placed first in the coed division and second overall out of 16 teams. They took first in their division and grand champions with the highest score out of all of the teams at the CCAA Cheerleading Championship in Dunkirk.

Then they traveled to Cleveland, OH, on Jan. 27 to compete in the Hard Rockin’ Nationals Competition and not only took first in their division, but once again earned the grand champions title when they scored highest among all divisions including coed, large varsity and college combined.

The Silver Creek coed competitive cheerleading team had their hardest and most important competition to date this past Sunday at Buffalo State, where they placed third in the Section VI finals. The top two teams in each division will move on to the state competition in Rochester.

Also, the Gowanda Central School District’s competitive cheer team on its first place finish in the small D2 varsity division at the CCAA division championships held Jan. 24, at Dunkirk High School, where they also won best choreography. The girls went on to place third out of six teams at SUNY Fredonia on Jan. 27, as well.
