Dunkirk’s Petrella, Fredonia’s Brown, Rey run at states
OBSERVER Staff Report
STATEN ISLAND — The NYS Track Meet was held this weekend in Staten Island and both Dunkirk and Fredonia had representatives.
Dunkirk’s Jericha Petrella took part in the 600m run and placed 18th after posting a time of 1:39.40.
Diego Rey of Fredonia placed 21st in the 1,000m run with a time of 2:39.47.
“Diego accomplished much,” said Fredonia Coach Tom Stokes. “He managed to focus his efforts at the end of the season in order to earn his return to the state meet by finishing a very close second last week.”
Emily Brown placed 26th in the 1,500m with a time of 4:59.88.
“Emily accomplished so much this season,” said Coach Stokes. “She won the section and lowered her 1,500m time by about 10 seconds this season. She has worked extremely hard and has done everything we could ask for. She ran against what is probably the toughest field of high school milers in the country. Four of the top 20 nationally ranked runners were in her race and in that pressure Emily still ran better than her best last year.”
