Olean basketball coach Jeff Anastasia resigns

OBSERVER Staff Report

After a state semifinal loss to Glens Falls and NY State leading scorer Joe Girard III, Olean was dealt yet another tough loss on Friday.

Hall of Famer and former state champion head coach Jeff Anastasia announced Friday’s game would be his last as Olean’s head coach.

Anastasia reached the 600 win mark in his career earlier this postseason, capturing his 12th sectional championship in the process. Olean captured 20 league titles over his time at Olean, in a league featuring tough challengers from Dunkirk, Fredonia and Southwestern in recent years. This season, Olean had a perfect record throughout the regular season and carried a 25-0 record into Friday’s showdown with Glens Falls. It was Olean’s sixth trip to the State Final Four under Anastasia.

Olean also loses its top six scorers from this year to graduation, led by Matt Droney and Mike Schmidt.
