OBSERVER Staff Report

Fredonia topped Southwestern, 4-2, on Wednesday, thanks to strong pitching from Anthony Gullo, shown at left. Gullo had a complete game win, allowing just two earned runs off four hits and two walks, while striking out three.

“Fredonia played error free for a third straight game, fantastic defense again,” said Fredonia head coach Vince Gullo. “Anthony did great job on mound. We really needed that from him. … It’s nice to know that we have three strong arms and more guys are going to get their chances down the road.”

Southwestern struck first, getting an early lead by capitalizing on the Mitch Pascarella double with an RBI single from Aidan Kennedy. Fredonia equalized on an RBI single from Trey Schwartz, scoring Alec Schrader.

It was even at 1-1 until the top of the fourth inning. The ‘Billies saw the bases loaded on three walks, Alec Schrader capitalized on the opportunity by sending a two out fly ball deep that was misplayed by the Trojans — clearing the bases and giving Fredonia a 4-1 lead that they would not surrender.

Pascarella was on the hill for Southwestern, going 6 1/3 innings pitched and just allowing three hits while striking out 11.

Southwestern did get a run back in the bottom of the fifth as Evan Bishop pinch hit an RBI single. Bishop’s RBI was the last run support Southwestern received, making a 4-2 final.

Fredonia improved to 3-0 in CCAA Division 1 West, while Southwestern fell to 2-3 in league.

“We’re doing just enough to win these games,” said Coach Gullo. “Looks like every league game is going to be close.”

Fredonia is back in action on Friday when they host Cassadaga Valley in another league game.
