Health & Wellness courses now open in Silver Creek

Special to The OBSERVER

SILVER CREEK — Several wellness and exercise classes for adults and children are being offered to the public via the Community Education division of the Silver Creek Central School District from April through June 2019.

These opportunities are open to the public and the community is encouraged to come sweat it out on campus.

Mommy/Daddy & Me Swim

Looking to get your child ready for the water this summer? This course, geared toward parents with children ages birth through and including preschool, will help you do that. A six-class course will take place Wednesdays from May 1 to June 5, from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the pool. Registration fee is $25; two children may enroll for $40. Class will be led by Jean Mahaney, certified swim instructor.

Learn how to:

Make your child feel comfortable in the water.

Properly supervise children and maintain safe behavior in and around the water.

Enter and exit the water with a child.

Establish — and strictly enforce — a rule that a child must get adult permission before entering the water.

Use holding and supporting techniques and when to use them.

Demonstrate your child’s readiness to try basic skills.

Proper submersion techniques.

Help children learn and practice skills appropriate for their age, level and ability.

Play and the importance of play as a way to learn.

Parents will be working with instructors and may choose to participate or not participate in any of the activities they and their child are comfortable with and ready to try. More than one parent may accompany child. Older siblings are welcome to come as helpers for no extra charge. Swim pants must be worn for infants and toddlers not yet potty trained.

Sit & Fit

All ages can benefit from this light and easy class, which will include simple chair exercises and stretching. We will include the use of stretch bands and light weights if you choose to bring this equipment to class with you. Some meditation will conclude the class. Come and have fun while you stay fit with instructor Betty Bates.

A 20-class session got underway April 2 and continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. until June 13 in Room 145. Registration fee is $40, but late-comers are welcome at a pro-rated fee.

Yoga Meets the Arts

Learn how meditation helps you tap into your creativity. In the Orient, artists, before they conceptualize their visions, perform gentle yoga and meditation. Instructor Sondra Holland learned this art technique when she was a student of TANKA, or Tibetan, artistic ways. She would enjoy very much sharing this lovely expression with future artists in Silver Creek and the surrounding area. Enrollees will gather for six total classes on Tuesdays from May 7 through June 11 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Room 415/elementary chorus room. Registration fee is $30.

Wee Folk Yoga & the Arts

All children 2 months – 12 years of age are welcome to participate in Wee Folk Yoga & the Arts. Children of all abilities, including special needs, are welcome and need to be accompanied by an adult, 18 years or older. Music, creative movement, story- telling, and drama will be partnered with Eastern yoga techniques. Instructor is Sondra Holland, NY State certified vocal teacher. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat or towel. The course consists of six classes held Tuesdays from May 7 through June 11 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Room 415/elementary chorus room. Registration fee is $30.

Men’s Basketball

Are you finding yourself spending too much time sitting around? Come out one night a week and get some exercise in a fun environment. Hone your skills. Enjoy some friendly competition with instructor Dwayne Haskins. Please note: Every person on their first visit must sign a waiver. Gather to play for 16 sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays from April 8 to June 12 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the elementary gym. Fee: $20 or $2 per class.
