OBSERVER Staff Report

ORCHARD PARK — Fredonia’s five boys tennis players left standing after the County Championships last week traveled to Orchard Park on Tuesday for the Section VI boys tennis playoffs. By the end of the day, all five — including four Fredonia seniors — saw their seasons come to an end.

In singles competition, Fredonia senior Neil Gens won his first round against Anthony Markello from East Aurora, 6-4, 6-1. Gens then lost in the quarterfinals to the top seed, Greg Hastings from North Tonawanda. Tuesday was the third and final visit to Sectionals for Gens, and wraps up what Fredonia coach Lisa Johnston called “an outstanding tennis career at Fredonia.”

In doubles competition, Max Kinkela and Caleb Reynolds — who are also both Fredonia seniors — defeated Danny Dy and James Leibring from Newfane, 6-3, 6-0 in their first match. In their second match, the duo faced the top seeded pair, Noah Sayoc and Declan Watson from Orchard Park, who have both been to States twice. Fredonia’s pair was swept to end their Hillbilly careers. Fredonia’s Dan Gifford and Jimmy Rush were swept in their first match by Nate Reilly and Grant Asklar from Niagara Falls.

Of the five Fredonia competitors, only Gifford returns to the team next year.
