Hillbillies track team throttles Olean

OBSERVER Staff Report

In many sports throughout the years, Fredonia and Olean have battled in closely contested showdowns. Tuesday was anything but that, as the Fredonia Hillbillies boys track and field team throttled Olean, 110-31, in a regular season track and field meet at Fredonia High School.

Jack Carlson won three individual events and a relay event to take home four victories for the Hillbillies. Carlson won the 800m in 2:11.7, the 1,600m in 4:55.9 and the 3,200m in 11:23.5 to lead Fredonia (4-1) to three event victories. The 3,200m relay team of Carlson, Kevin Redfield, Chris Annear and Ledreth Velez-Olmo won for Fredonia with a time of 9:26.6.

In addition to Carlson, two other Hillbillies won three individual events on Tuesday. Hessen Bahgat took first place in the pole vault with a personal best mark of 13-feet. He also set another personal best in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.5 seconds. Also, in the high jump, Bahgat won with a mark of 5-feet-4-inches. Bahgat’s Fredonia teammate Rian Budzinski took home three individual wins, as well. He won the long jump with a mark of 18-feet-1/4-inches. Budzinski also won the triple jump with a mark of 35-feet-3-inches and the 400 hurdles in 1:01.7.

Fredonia’s Oliver Madariaga won the 200m in 23.7 seconds and the 400m in 53.6 seconds. Nate Shuart won the shot put and discus for Fredonia — the shot put in a personal best 123-feet and the discus with a mark of 38-feet-11-inches. Shuart was part of the 400m relay team for Fredonia — along with Redfield, Grayson Krzyzanowicz and Marcus Seastedt — that took first in 49.2 seconds. The Fredonia 1,600m relay of T.J. Stokes, Brendon Nero, Annear and Velez-Olmo took first in 3:53.2.

“We had quite a few personal bests, which is good — that’s our goal by the end of the season,” said Fredonia coach Bob Ball. “We’re gearing up for the playoffs now.”

While the Fredonia girls track and field team fell to Olean, 85-48, the Lady ‘Billies had five event winners, including four in individual events. As usual, Emily Brown shined for Fredonia, with wins in the 1,500m (5:16.9), 800m (2:30.7), 200m (27.7) and as part of the 800m relay team. Joining Brown in the relay victory were Claire Lanski, Anna Buchanan and Ashlyn Ambrose.

Individually, Lanski won the 400m in 1:10.6. Buchanan was first in the triple jump in 31-feet-1-inch, while Ambrose took third in the 800m. Emily Timmerman was second in the 100 hurdles and the 100m dash, and took third in the 200m. Paige Supkoski won the 100m dash for Fredonia.

Fredonia is in action next at the County Championships on Friday and Saturday in Olean.
