OBSERVER Staff Report

The Dunkirk Lady Marauders celebrated Senior Night with a 16-1 victory over Tapestry in a non-league softball game at Dunkirk High School on Thursday evening.

The Lady Marauders scored seven runs over the first two innings to run away with the game early on. Dunkirk added eight more runs over the course of the fifth and sixth innings for good measure.

Dunkirk (9-5, 7-5) had three batters tally three hits apiece, two of which were seniors. Dunkirk senior Olivia Yerico-Piazza had three hits including a triple, while senior Mackenzie Gugino had three hits in what may be her final game at Dunkirk High School. Junior centerfielder Kymi Nance also had three hits, including a double. Senior Emma Newton singled in her Senior Night, as well, while Emily Baumgartner was out because of illness.

Earning the win for Dunkirk was Monica Pokoj, who finished off her final home game in Dunkirk — at least in the regular season — with a complete game victory. She threw seven innings of one-run ball, with five hits allowed, no walks issued and 12 strikeouts.

“She came in ready to pitch. I think she was amped up pitching in what might be her final game in Dunkirk,” said Dunkirk head coach Michelle Gilmour of Pokoj’s performance.

Dunkirk has one more game on the schedule in the regular season, a rematch with Tapestry on Monday in Buffalo.
