Olson pitches Gowanda to B2 final

OBSERVER Staff Reports

GOWANDA — Tanner Olson shined in a complete game on the mound, to lead Gowanda over division rival Allegany-Limestone, 5-0, in a Section VI Class B2 semifinal baseball game at Gowanda High School, on Tuesday.

After allowing a leadoff double to the Gators, Olson settled in on the mound, allowed just two more hits and struck out two batters on his way to a complete game victory.

The Panthers got on the board early, in the first inning, Gavin Phillips walked then made his way around the bases, eventually scoring on a RBI from Justin Kohn. Gowanda later added two more runs in both the third and fifth inning, scoring their final runs off a Matt Smuda two-run single.

The Panthers advance to the Section VI Class B2 baseball finals against No. 1 seed Roy-Hart, on Thursday at Depew High School.

North Collins 2, Pine Valley 1

NORTH COLLINS — As a result of poor weather, the North Collins Eagles instead hosted Pine Valley in a Section VI Class D baseball game and won 2-1.

Pine Valley still played as the home team, but that would not help them as Tyler Mathis pitched six innings, and gave up just two hits, while striking out six in the victory for the Eagles.

North Collins head coach Scott Gill stated Mathis’ performance on the mound was critical in the win, “mixed his pitches well, got ahead in the count… his breaking ball was on.”

David Gullo provided the offense for North Collins, getting a big 2-run single in the third inning.

The Eagles travel to Brocton on Thursday to play in the Class D semifinal game.
