Tennis singles sectional semis are set

LAKEWOOD — Singles representatives for next week’s Section VI Boys Tennis Championships are now set after the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Championships began Tuesday at the Lakewood YMCA.

Frewsburg’s Jameson Sposato, Olean’s Mark Brown, Southwestern’s Eston Shedd and Fredonia’s Neil Gens all advanced to Thursday’s semifinals after a pair of wins each Tuesday.

Sposato beat Salamanca’s Kendall Valvo, 6-0, 6-3 in the first round before topping Maple Grove’s Porter DeMink, 6-1, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.

Brown topped Panama’s Eric Sweeney, 6-0, 6-1 in the first round and Sweeney’s teammate Carson Heimburg, 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

Gens advanced to the semifinals by virtue of a 6-2, 6-1 sweep of Olean’s Alex Blehar in the first round and a 6-3, 6-2 win over Maple Grove’s Kampbell Howard in the quarterfinals.

Shedd had the most difficult route to the semifinals, beating Dunkirk’s Ryan Wills, 6-2, 6-3 in the first round before being the first semifinalist to need three sets, losing to Fredonia’s Dan Gifford, 4-6, before rebounding for 6-2, 6-4 victories.

In the quarterfinals, Howard beat Falconer’s Coleson Barber, 6-1, 6-2; Gifford beat Salamanca’s Liam Long, 6-2, 6-3; DeMink topped Salamanca’s Neland Cummings, 6-3, 6-0; and Heimburg downed Southwestern’s Brayden Haaksma, 6-0, 6-0.

The first round and quarterfinals of the doubles tournament will begin today at 11 a.m. The semifinals and finals for both the singles and doubles will begin Thursday at 11 a.m.
