With a heavy downpour earlier in the day, there was a question as to whether the Fredonia Little League Complex would be playable on Tuesday evening for the District 38 non-sanctioned 10-12 Little League All-Star tournament playoff game between Fredonia and Falconer. Once it was decided that the game was a go, Fredonia coach Luke Gullo decided to turn to young ace pitcher Ashton Putney on the mound in Tuesday’s big game with a berth in the tournament’s championship game on Thursday on the line.

When it was all said and done, Fredonia did not leave any question as to the result in Tuesday’s matchup, with a victory over Falconer, 11-1, by way of the mercy rule in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Fredonia scored a run in each of the first two innings for an early 2-0 lead, then two more came in early in the home half of the third inning to double the lead. Then, with a 4-0 lead, Colin Luce came to the plate with the bases loaded. Luce cleared the bases with a triple to deep left-center field to put Fredonia ahead 7-0.

That ended up being plenty of support for Putney, who did all his coaches could ask for. Putney earned the win after allowing just one run on three hits, while striking out seven batters on 62 pitches over four innings of work.

Falconer’s lone run came on a home run to dead center field by Jackson Lillie — who saw time on the mound for Falconer in the defeat, as well. Fredonia added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, putting the 10-run mercy rule in effect after the game’s 11th run crossed the plate. In addition to Luce’s three-run triple, Ryan Kelly had an RBI single for Fredonia, while Luca Gullo had a single. Brady Crawford and Andrew Cowan each had an RBI for Fredonia, as well.

Fredonia now moves on to host the championship game on Thursday night, at 6 p.m., back at the Fredonia Little League Complex. Southwestern and Brocton-Portland will play today for the right to play Fredonia, after their originally scheduled matchup on Tuesday was postponed because of Mother Nature.
