The 10th annual Joe Karnes Memorial softball tournament takes place today, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thirteen teams will play in a double elimination tournament at various different fields around Dunkirk, including Wright Park. Prize money will be awarded to the winners of the tournament. The 13 team turnout is around the average for the event, with the peak being 18 teams. Teams must feature at least three girls. The first round pairings were drawn Friday night at Bart’s Cove in Dunkirk. The tournament is organized by Cindy Karnes, in honor of her father Joe Karnes, who was a coach in the area for over 30 years. The Joe Karnes Memorial scholarship is given out every year to a boy and girl from Dunkirk high school to celebrate volunteerism. Cindy Karnes would like to thank the umpires, who all volunteer to do the event.
