MAYVILLE — Fredonia and Chautauqua Lake played to a 1-1 double overtime tie in the opening match of the CCAA West League schedule.

Following a scoreless first half, the Hillbillies went up 1-0 in the 42nd minute on a goal by Adam Sellari, the first of his varsity career. Juan Matias had the assist.

“It was good to see Adam’s hard work rewarded with the goal,” Fredonia coach Jim Rush said. “Juan made a great pass and Adam finished off the scoring chance. He was in great position to score the goal.”

The Thunderbirds (2-1-1, 0-0-1) tied the score at 1-1 when Hunter Harris converted a penalty kick in the 64th minute.

The Hillbillies (0-2-1, 0-0-1) finished with 18 shots on goal. Chautauqua Lake goalkeeper Erik Peterson had 17 saves in net.

“We put quality shots on their keeper,” Rush said. “He made several outstanding saves, including one on a penalty kick.”

Tyler Rosen had six saves in goal for Fredonia.

“We continue to improve and get better each game,” Rush said. “The players responded and pushed themselves throughout the match. It was a match played in high heat and high humidity and both teams worked really hard.”

The Hillbillies open the home portion of their season Monday night against Southwestern in a match scheduled for Fredonia State at 7 p.m.

Pine Valley/Gowanda 2, North Collins 0

SOUTH DAYTON — The Pine Valley/Gowanda Panthers (2-4, 1-1) topped the North Collins Eagles, 2-0, in a Section VI CCAA Division 2 boys soccer game at Pine Valley High School, on Wednesday.

The Panthers offense got off to a strong start as Darwin Westlund scored the opening goal in the 12th minute on a pass from Evan Frontuto. Frontuto again found the stat sheet minutes later, scoring a goal from Wayne Libby and Carson Reger in the 17th minute.

“We finally started to figure stuff out,” stated Pine Valley/Gowanda head coach Jeff Housler. “We still have some stuff to figure out… we will continue to work to get better.”

The Panthers are back in action on Monday when they travel to Westfield to take on the Westfield/Brocton Wolverines.
