The Fredonia Lady Billies tennis team continues their roaring pace to start the season, edging the Chautauqua Lake Lady Thunderbirds 3-2. For the ‘Billies, it was won in the singles portion.

Bernie Gens took down her opposing number one singles player Emily Bauer in two sets, 6-0, 6-0, while Alicia Kluck followed suit, defeating Logan Walczak by the same score.

Selin Arnavut rounded out the singles sweep for the Lady Billies by defeating Chautauqua Lake’s Elizabeth Marshaus 6-2, 6-0.

“All three girls played confident tennis and used the windy conditions to their advantage playing deep shots that were hard to return,” said Fredonia coach Lisa Johnston.

The Thunderbirds were able to rally in both of their doubles matches, getting both of their match wins there, as Kira Erikson and Elise Riedesel beat Fredonia’s Marissa Burr and Victoria Miller in three sets, 4-6, 6-0, 10-4, with the third set being a 10 point tie break due to time constraints.

Chautauqua Lake’s Emily Bauer returns a volley in her match against Fredonia’s Bernadette Gens. Fredonia would go on to twin the match, 3-2.

Chautauqua Lake’s Abby Paulus and Naomi Fisher were able to beat Fredonia’s Mia Gullo and Grace Crino to round out the Lady Thunderbirds double sweep, 6-0, 6-1.

Fredonia will next be in action against Frewsburg tonight in a non-league game, and move to 5-0 on the season and a 3-0 league record after last night’s victory.

Chautauqua Lake meanwhile drops to 2-3 on the year in what have been mostly close matches, will move on to play Tuesday, Sept. 17 against Southwestern in a 4 p.m. start time.
