Westfield volleyball wins Senior Night

OBSERVER Staff Report

WESTFIELD — The Westfield Lady Wolverines held Senior Night for the team’s five senior volleyball players — Neida Hernandez-Bautista, Jennifer Bautista-Lopez, Brooklyn Bane, Avery Knapp and Abbi Warner. For a program that was combined with Brocton until regaining its own identity this year, celebrating Senior Night was a monument in itself.

It just got even better for the Lady Wolverines with the way the game turned out.

The Westfield Lady Wolverines defeated the Brocton Lady Bulldogs in an exciting five-set non-league match at Westfield Academy by scores of 19-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-17 and 25-22.

“Neither side quit, it was great to see,” said Westfield coach Greg Birner. “We were fortunate enough to come out with the win.”

Among Westfield’s five seniors, only two had previous experience at the varsity level: Knapp and Warner. They combined for 13 digs, six aces and four kills in the first win of the season for the Lady Wolverines.

“We have a lot of first year seniors. We’re a very young program, but these five seniors are leaving a legacy behind for the girls to follow,” sair Birner.

Westfield was led by a pair of eighth graders on Wednesday. Keara Kincaid had 15 kills, six aces, four digs and a block, while Tanleigh Bestine had 15 assists, 10 digs, six aces and five kills.

Birner also noted that his team “played an amazing defensive game.”

Brocton was led by Cheyanna Rivera five kills, five blocks, three aces and an assist. Tiffinie Santiago added five assists and two digs.
