Hillbillies take third at Gary Gross tourney

OBSERVER Staff Report

MEDINA — The Fredonia Hillbillies boys wrestling team competed at the Gary Gross Memorial Tournament in Medina this weekend and finished third out of 18 teams.

“I feel we wrestled pretty well,” stated Fredonia head coach Joe Santilli. “As a collective, we battled pretty hard, had some good matches and we let a few matches get away from us… you need these tests this time of year.”

Fredonia only finished behind Spencerport who is third in the state and Niagara Wheatfield, while individually Cole Golembieski and Ceric Kristan had second place finishes.

Alex Kristy finished in third and Hunter Larson finished in fourth, while both Jake Skinner and Mike Ball went 4-1 on the weekend but reached their five match totals and couldn’t move further in the tournament. Matt Lotter continued his development going 3-2 and Jack Storm and Antonio Pagan had strong weekends going 2-2.

Fredonia will finish up its Duals season against CCAA Division II Champion Portville tonight in Portville. It will be a good final test before the postseason as the Panthers have had a strong regular season going undefeated for their league title.

“We started the season with a challenge, we’re going to end with a challenge,” stated Coach Santilli.
