Devils baseball split in Virginia

EMORY — Sophomore Tylor Murphy had a productive weekend at the plate to lead the Fredonia State baseball team to a split at Emory and Henry on Sunday. Murphy had two homeruns and two doubles, while totaling six RBI. The Devils took Game 1, 8-5, before falling 8-5 in Game 2.

The Devils ripped four doubles and a homreun in the win. Murphy, Russ Mistretta, Kole Brink, and Joseph Coene each doubled, while Murphy homered. Brian Chatt added a pair of hits for Fredonia State.

Nicholas Lawlor got the win on the mound, going four innings. Kenny Ynoa picked up the save with a scoreless seventh.

Game 2 saw the Devils crack 13 hits but muster only five runs. Junior James Mitchell made his Blue Devil debut with three hits. Matt Heffernan, Mistretta, and Murphy eachadded a pair of hits. Murphy entered the game as a pinch hitter, and blasted a Grand Slam. He later doubled off the wall. Mistretta finished the day with three hits.

Sam Cestra took the loss giving up three runs in three innings. He was one of six pitchers to take the mound. Bubba Brown, Ryan Howard, and Ryan Hann each had scoreless outings.

The Devils are back in action when they travel to Myrtle Beach next weekend for a four-game road trip at the Cal Ripken Complex.
