Dunkirk’s Nadara O’Dell named CCAA West 1 Player of the Year

CCAA West 1 All-Stars revealed

Nadara O'Dell

Nadara O’Dell spent most of the season atop the stat sheet for the high-scoring Dunkirk Lady Marauders. The rest of the league clearly took notice, as O’Dell was named the CCAA Division 1 West Player of the Year.

“It’s really great for her. Nadara had a great season. She scored almost 800 points for us in two years,” said Dunkirk coach Ken Ricker.

O’Dell was joined on the league’s First Team All-Stars by senior teammates Jessica Beehler and Kymi Nance. Southwestern’s Gianna Hoose, Maple Grove’s Riley Caskey and Chautauqua Lake’s Lily Woodis were also named to the First Team.

“There were days where Kymi [Nance] could have been Player of the Year, and so could Jess [Beehler],” said Ricker. “Our group — and our league — was just so good.”

The Second Team All-Stars features two Fredonia Lady ‘Billies seniors: Kazlin Beers and Nagely Vazquez. Chautauqua Lake’s Alexis Jacobson, Maple Grove’s Bre Hill and Southwestern’s Sofia Genareo were also named to the Second Team.

Dunkirk senior Olivia Smith earned an Honorable Mention selection. Also earning Honorable Mention were Allegany-Limestone seniors Taylor Davis and Tierney Hemphill, Chautauqua Lake’s Rebecca Henry and Kyleigh Perdue, Maple Grove’s Anna Tranum, Olean’s Norah Sweitzer and Southwestern eighth grader Reece Beaver.

Allegany-Limestone was honored with the Team Sportsmanship Award.

Dunkirk won the league with a record of 11-1 in league play. Southwestern and Maple Grove were tied for second in the league standings at 8-4. Dunkirk’s only loss of the season came to Maple Grove. Dunkirk and Southwestern each won Section VI championships, while Dunkirk then defeated Southwestern in the Class B crossover game at Buffalo State College. The Lady Marauders ended the postseason prematurely with a final record of 24-1 as the coronavirus outbreak cancelled the state tournament.

Chautauqua Lake, who finished league play with a record of 6-6, was also a Section VI champion in Class C1 before falling to Holland in the Class C crossover game.

“I admired the league from afar when I coached at Jamestown and when I was out of coaching,” said Ricker. “Last year, we had three sectional champions, and we had three again this year. We were in the toughest league in WNY and the toughest class in B1. … To win such a tough league, after winning only two league games a year ago, you can’t say more about the five seniors and the role players we had.”
