Kindberg earns first place in NYSAPA writing contest

The New York State Associated Press Association announced Thursday the winners in its 2019 competitions recognizing the best in newspaper and broadcast journalism.

Scott Kindberg, the regional sports editor, received a first place in the Division II feature story category for his piece entitled, “Remembering Russ,” which ran March 15, 2019. The story detailed the relationship between Maple Grove girls basketball coach Bill Price and his late father, Merritt Russell “Russ” Price Jr., as the Lady Red Dragons prepared for their first-ever trip to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association final four.

The story was among two Division II feature finalists announced in April, but the place finishes weren’t known until Thursday.

Kindberg is a Jamestown native and has been with the newspaper since 1983. This is his 14th career AP award. Thirty-three newspapers submitted 715 entries.

Also winning an award in the Division I headline writing category is Braden Carmen, who claimed a second place.
