Chautauqua Fusion recently announced the top shooters in its May 2020 Top Gun Challenge.

Inspired by the April 2020 Wall Street Journal article, titled “Shooting Hoops Through the Pandemic,” coaches Chris Dole and Mike Engdahl challenged their players to a shooting contest for the month of May.

The contest was named the “Top Gun Challenge,” and each player received a chart with 21 spots to shoot from on a half-court basketball court. Players were required to make 10 shots from 19 spots and five apiece from two spots for a total of 200 made shots. Each player then recorded the number of shots it took her to make the required shots into an app that produced a spreadsheet for the coaches to monitor progress.

During the past month, over 20 players and three coaches participated in the challenge resulting in over 198,000 shots made. Grace Lundmark from Falconer Central School was crowned the “Top Gun Champion” and made 18,000 shots during the month. In second place was Alexys Neckers from Clymer Central School with 15,800 shots made, and in third place was Kiera Loberg from Panama Central School with 15,400 shots made.

In addition to Lundmark, Neckers, and Loberg, six additional players achieved “Top Gun” status by making at least 10,000 shots during the month. These players include Sam Nyweide (Clymer), Kyra Pence (Randolph), Brooke Warner (Panama), Mia Engdahl (Southwestern), Abbey Galati (Southwestern) and Haleigh Dellow (Westfield). Furthermore, two coaches, Dole and Tiffany Faulkner, also achieved Top Gun status.

Nine players achieved “F-5” status by making 5,000-9,999 shots during the month. These players include Kait Galati (Southwestern), Ava Nyweide (Clymer), Kait Lindsey (Sherman), Hayden Fisher (Sherman), Kylie Morgan (Panama), Lilly Odell (Panama), Maddie Price (Maple Grove), Jessica Lyon (Panama) and Cassandra Lyon (Panama). One coach, Engdahl, also achieved F-5 status.

Dole stated that he “was very happy with our overall turnout and the competitiveness of each of our four teams. Grace, in particular, proved to be a workhorse while Neckers and Loberg battled right up to the last minute for second and third, respectively.”

Engdahl added “the hard work and dedication of the girls this past month was phenomenal. It is even more impressive when you consider that all of the shots were made outside during the month of May. These girls made shots in rain, snow, wind and high temperatures.”

Chautauqua Fusion is a local girls youth basketball organization. Chautauqua Fusion sponsors include Neil’s Propane, the Sherman NY Youth Foundation, SKF, SKF UAW Local 338, Dr. Brent Deuink and Michael Engdahl, JD, MS (Personal Financial Planning), CFP®.
