Mathews shoots 77 at Chautauqua’s Lake Course

CHAUTAUQUA — Dave Mathews shot the low round of 77 on Chautauqua Golf Club’s Lake Course for his 20th career Wednesday Travel League victory.

Mathews edged Wayne Stoughton(78) by one stroke, while Robert Calph finished third with 80.

Stoughton led the front nine with a 1-over par 36 while Calph led the back nine with a 1-over par 38.

In the B Flight, Bob Thompson won on a tiebreaker over John Bongiovanni Jr.

In the C Flight, Don Kujawa was the winner on a tiebreaker over Jim Ellman Sr. and Dan Kubera.

The D Flight winner was Jeff Marsowicz.

The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Bob Kujawa.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Pete Gawron (No. 2), Mathews (No. 5), Stoughton (No. 6), Calph (Nos. 7, 18) and Butch Mackowiak (No. 8); B Flight — Dave Criscione (No. 6), Thompson (No. 11) and Larry Klajbor (No. 14); C Flight — John Tofil (Nos. 1,11), Dave Franklin (No. 2), Ellman (No. 5), Gary Haase (No. 8) and Jon Riforgiat (No. 12); D Flight — Dan Kaszuba (Nos. 4, 12), Marsowicz (Nos. 5,6), Brian Lore (Nos. 10, 18), Jack Hood (No. 13) and Joe Bifaro (No. 16).

Closest to the pin were Calph (Nos. 4, 8), Dave Wallace (No. 6), Tofil (No. 12) and Chad Gollnitz (No. 15).

Top point winners were Calph (50), Stoughton and Mackowiak (35 each), and Tofil (32). Season points leaders are: 1. Mackowiak (81); 2. Stoughton (71); 3. Criscione (52); 4. Calph (50); 5. Tom Destro (41); 6. Franklin and Frank Benamati (40 each); 8. Wallace (39); 9. Tony Destro (37); and 10. John Tofil (36).

Dave Franklin passed Paul Olkowski for eighth place on the all-time points list. Joe Bifaro went over 1,500 career points. Pete Gawron broke his own record for oldest golfer to shoot below his age with an 86.
