Wednesday travel league holds NY Open

SALAMANCA — The Wednesday Travel League held its first major event of the season, the “New York Open,” at Elkdale Country Club.

Wayne Stoughton earned his first major victory with the low round of 77. Robert Calph finished one stroke behind with 78 and Dave Wallace came in third place with 80. Stoughton led the front nine with a 1-over par 36 and Calph led the back nine with 39.

In the B Flight, Dave Momberger successfully defended his 2019 B Flight crown, after a tiebreaker with Jon Riforgiat. In the C Flight, Bob Thompson was the winner after a tiebreaker with Pete Pinkoski and Frank Benamati. In the D Flight, Pat Weaver won after a tiebreaker with Ron Szach. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Jack Hood.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight, Chad Gollnitz (No. 2), Calph (Nos. 3, 15), Stoughton (No .6), and Mike Wolfe (Nos. 11,14); B Flight, Riforgiat (Nos. 1, 13), Gary Haase (No. 2), Jeff Marsowicz (Nos. 4, 14), Mike Willoughby (No. 5), Dave Momberger (No. 8), Joe Bifaro (No. 10) and John Bongiovanni Jr. (No. 15); C Flight, Benamati (Nos. 4, 17), Don Kujawa (No. 5), Greg Momberger (No. 10) and Dan Kaszuba (Nos. 12, 13); and D Flight, Lenny Leszkowicz (Nos. 2, 15, 16), Weaver (Nos. 6, 7, 18), Hood (No. 10), Szach (No. 14) and Bill Aldrich (No. 17).

Closest to the pin were Marsowicz (No. 4), Ed Tofil (No. 9), Riforgiat (No. 12) and Wolfe (No. 16).

Winners of the par-3 contest were Dave Mathews (A Flight, +1), Willoughby (B, +1), Benamati(C, +3) and Brian Lore (D, +4).

Top point winners were Marsowicz (61), Benamati (54), Wolfe (36), Riforgiat (34)\ and Weaver (32). Season points leaders are: 1. Benamati (94), 2. Stoughton (85), 3. Butch Mackowiak (81), 4. Marsowicz (80), 5. Calph (78), 6. Riforgiat (55), 7. Dave Criscione (52), 8. Kaszuba (46), 9. Wolfe and Leszkowicz (44 each).

Milestones: Pat Weaver passed Al Etzel to move into fifth place on the all-time points list. John Bongiovanni Jr. became the 16th golfer to reach 2,000 career points.
