JCC pushes volleyball, women’s soccer to spring

Men’s soccer will not compete this school year

JAMESTOWN — In light of adjustments made last week by the National Junior College Athletic Association, Jamestown Community College has amended its athletic program plan.

Jamestown CC, which competes in the NJCAA’s Region 3, will conduct its cross-country program on the Cattaraugus County Campus in Olean this fall. The wrestling, swimming and diving, and men’s and women’s basketball programs will compete at the start of the spring semester on the Jamestown Campus.

The women’s volleyball and women’s soccer programs, which normally compete in the fall, have had their championship season moved to the spring semester. Jamestown CC will not sponsor men’s soccer in the 2020-21 academic year. Baseball, softball and golf will continue to have their championship seasons in the spring, as originally scheduled.

“The NJCAA restructured its athletic program schedule for the 2020-21 academic year, which includes adjustments to competition and championship dates,” said George Sisson, Jamestown CC’s athletics and recreation director. “Our teams will have organized practices which will be staggered throughout the fall semester using NJCAA and New York state guidelines to maintain the health and safety of athletes.”

Health screenings will be conducted regularly on student-athletes and coaches. Social distancing and mask wearing will be encouraged wherever possible.

“We are excited about the opportunity to continue our athletic program even though it will take a lot of effort from all who are involved,” Sisson added, noting that student-athletes will have access to a variety of student support services.

“Our most recent plan of action provides a path that keeps our student-athletes competing at the highest level with proper safety measures in place.” said Christopher Parker, NJCAA president and chief executive officer. “As we move forward as an association, we will continue to provide opportunities for our student-athletes, coaches, and all those involved with the NJCAA to be safe and successful.”
