Calph tops Wednesday Travel League field

DARIEN — The Wednesday Travel League made its first trip to Chestnut Hill Country Club, making it the 70th different golf course played in league history.

Robert Calph shot the low round of 76 to earn his league-leading fourth tour victory of the season. The win also gave Calph 41 career titles, placing him in a tie for fifth place all-time with Tony Nicosia and Ron Rys. Dave Criscione finished second with 78 and Al Etzel was third with 79. Calph was low on the front nine with 37 while Bill Aldrich, Criscione, Jeff Marsowicz, and Jeff Rich all shot the low back nine with 38s.

In the B Flight, Aldrich was the winner after a tiebreaker with Wayne Ormsby. In the C Flight, Pete Gawron won on a tiebreaker with Marsowicz. In the D Flight, John Tofil won on a tiebreaker with Frank Benamati. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Brian Lore.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight, Bill Merryweather (No. 4) and Calph (No.7, eagle); B Flight, Dennis Gawronski Sr. (No. 2), Pat Weaver (No. 6), Tim Walawender (Nos. 7, 18), and Aldrich (Nos. 13, 16); C Flight, Gary Haase (No. 5), Tony Destro (No.7), and Joe Bifaro (No. 14); D Flight, Pete Pinkoski (Nos. 1, 5, 7), Bob Kujawa (Nos. 3, 10), Benamati (Nos. 9, 16), Lore (No. 11), and Tofil (Nos.12, 17).

Closest to the pin were Gawronski (No. 2), Weaver (No. 6), Marsowicz (No. 11), and Mick Dunning Sr. (No. 17).

Top point winners were Gawronski and Weaver (53 each), Aldrich (19), and Calph, Dunning, Walawender, and Marsowicz (18 each). Season points leaders are 1. Dave Wallace (202), 2. Calph (193), 3. Wayne Stoughton (172), 4. Weaver (156), 5. John Tofil (140), 6. Aldrich (134), 7. Benamati (125), 8. Mike Wolfe (123), 9. Lenny Leszkowicz (121) and10. Marsowicz (118).

This week’s superlatives: Calph’s eagle 3 on the par-5 seventh hole was the third of his Travel League career, placing him in a tie for second most all-time with John Tofil, Ron Rys, and Mike Wolfe. Pat Weaver passed Butch Mackowiak for fourth place on the all-time points list. Dennis Gawronski Jr. (on his birthday) went over 1,500 career points.

This week the league plays Cardinal Hills in Randolph. The first group tees off at 9:30. At this time all foursomes are full, but to sign up on the sub list, text or call 785-2291. Golfers are reminded to follow the league’s tradition of wearing red shirts (and anything else red) every time we play Cardinal Hills.
