Kirk Stauffer named director of golf at CI
CHAUTAUQUA — Chautauqua Institution has announced the appointment of Kirk Stauffer as director of golf.
In this newly created role, made possible through philanthropy, Stauffer assumes leadership of the Chautauqua Golf Club, and is responsible for managing and continuously developing all aspects of golf operations at Chautauqua Institution.
Stauffer’s charges in the new post include providing a clear vision strategically aligned with 150 Forward, the Institution’s strategic plan, and the parallel Campus and Golf Club master plans; identifying additional sales and marketing opportunities; ensuring consistent delivery of customer service excellence; and maximizing revenue and profitability. Areas of direct oversight also include the Chautauqua Golf Club’s Pro Shop and Learning Center; course maintenance operations; food, beverage and banquet facility — The Double Eagle — and locker rooms and other golf facilities administration.
“We were grateful to receive a considerable response to our posting for this position, and fortunate to consider strong candidates from all manner of backgrounds and experience levels,” said Director of Recreation Meg Pickard, who oversees all recreation operations at Chautauqua Institution. “In addition to his remarkable accomplishments as a professional golfer, Kirk became our top choice thanks to his track record of care for his patrons and guests, and particularly his passion for introducing newcomers to golf and fostering their love for the game. We’re excited to see how his leadership inspires the continued elevation of our already highly regarded playing conditions and customer service.”
Most recently, Stauffer served as head professional at Pine Acres Country Club in Bradford, Pennsylvania, where he instituted Get Golf Ready programs that teach individuals to play golf in just a few lessons. During his career, he has recruited more than 100 individuals through training programs and mentorship — many of the young men and women have grown into leadership positions within the golfing community.
Stauffer is also a well-known and active member of the Western New York section of the Professional Golfers’ Association, having served as a member, and from 2011-13 as president, of its Board of Directors. He is also a member in good standing with PGA of America, whose members work daily to grow interest and participation in the game of golf. Among Stauffer’s many professional achievements, he has been named WNYPGA Player of the Year 11 times and WNYPGA Senior Player of the Year eight times; is a five-time WNYPGA Section Champion and four-time WNYPGA Senior Champion. Kirk was inducted into the WNYPGA Hall of Fame in 2015.
“It’s a thrill for me to take on this role as steward of the amazing golf tradition at Chautauqua while keeping up with innovations in course management and customer experience,” Stauffer said. “I want all our Chautauqua County and Western New York neighbors to know that this is your golf club, and we invite you to enjoy some safe and healthy outdoor recreational time with us this season.”
Stauffer said he looks forward to meeting players in the coming weeks either virtually or at a safe social distance at Chautauqua. Members and patrons are also encouraged to acknowledge Head Professional Troy Moss, Superintendent Trevor Burlingame and other staff members for their remarkable efforts in maintaining the course and playing conditions and creating an exemplary customer experience in the challenging COVID-19 environment.
