Tofil captures Wednesday Travel League’s second major of season

NORTH EAST, Pa. — The Wednesday Travel League held its second major of the season, the U.S. Open, at Green Meadows Golf Course.

Ed Tofil was the overall winner with the low round of 80. It was his first U.S. Open win and sixth major victory overall, second-most all-time.

Robert Calph finished in second with 81 and Wayne Stoughton was third with 83. Calph and Dave Wallace led the front nine with 39s while Tofil led the back nine with 39.

Other flight winners were: Butch Mackowiak (B Flight), Pete Pinkoski (C Flight) and Jack Hood (D Flight). The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Angelo Leone.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Dave Franklin (No. 5), Wallace (No. 14) and Stoughton (Nos. 17 and 18); B Flight — Jeff Rich (No. 2), Pat Weaver (No. 8), Mackowiak (No. 12) and Tim Walawender (No. 17); C Flight — John Tofil (Nos. 2 and 17), Frank Benamati (No. 10), Ron Szach (No. 13) and Wayne Ormsby (No. 18); D Flight — Pete Gawron (Nos. 1, 3, 17), Hood (Nos. 2, 15), Bill Aldrich (No. 4), Gary Haase (Nos. 6, 11), Matthew Haase (No. 8), Gary Richardson (No. 12) and Leone (No. 14).

Closest to the pin were Jeff Marsowicz (No. 3), Ken Kaus (No. 13) and Dan Kaszuba (No. 16). Winners of the Par 3 contest were: A Flight — Mike Wolfe (plus-1); B Flight — Mackowiak (plus-2); C Flight — John Waterman (plus-2); D Flight — Lenny Leszkowicz (plus-2).

Top point winners were Gawron (35), Hood (30), Mackowiak (25) and John Tofil (25). Season points leaders: 1. Wallace (202), 2. Calph (175), 3. Stoughton (172), 4. John Tofil (128), 5. Wolfe (123), 6. Leszkowicz (121), 7. Tom Destro (117), 8. Aldrich (115), 9. Benamati (113), 10. Kaszuba (111). Butch Mackowiak also moved past Pat Weaver into fourth place on the all-time points list.
