Williams, Whipsnakes to play for title Sunday

Zed Williams and the Whipsnakes are going to play for a Premier Lacrosse League championship Sunday afternoon.

The Silver Creek graduate has his teammates to thank for the opportunity.

The top-seeded Whipsnakes built a 6-1 first-half lead late Friday night, but then needed overtime to knock off the fourth-seeded Redwoods, 13-12, in the semifinals.

Remarkably Williams — the league’s leading goal scorer entering the game — and Matt Rambo — the defending league Most Valuable Player and this season’s leading scorer combined for zero points.

Jay Carlson had a hat trick by halftime and finished with four goals while Brad Smith had a goal and five assists for Whipsnakes. Michael Erhardt had a pair of two-point goals and Jeremy Sieverts scored the game-winning on his only shot of the game.

For Redwoods, Matt Kavanagh had four goals and Ryder Garnsey added two.

Now Whipsnakes will deal with seventh-seeded Chaos in the final Sunday at 12:30 p.m. on NBC.

During group play, Whipsnakes beat Chaos, 12-7, during a game in which Williams had four goals on five shots.

During the tournament, Whipsnakes has averaged 13.8 goals per game while allowing 8.8. They have committed 79 turnovers and their goalies have a 60% save percentage.

Chaos is averaging 10.7 goals per game and allowing 11.0. They have committed 87 turnovers while their goalies have a 63% save percentage.
