Schrantz wins ‘Commissioner’s Cup’ at Chautauqua Golf Club on Wednesday

The Wednesday Travel League held its sixth annual “Commissioner’s Cup” honoring the memory of a great friend, fellow golfer and past league Commissioner Bruce “Java” Chrabasz.

This year the tournament was held on Chautauqua Golf Club’s Lake Course. Golfers wore brown, orange and white, the colors of Java’s favorite football team, the Cleveland Browns.

The 2020 winner of the “Commissioner’s Cup” was Jack Schrantz, capturing the title for a third time. The low scratch round of 78 was shot by Brad Allen. Wayne Stoughton finished second with 79. In a tie for third with 80s were Dave Criscione, Dave Mathews, Ed Tofil and Mike Wolfe. Allen was low on the front nine with an even-par 35. Wolfe led the back nine with 39.

In the B Flight, John Waterman was the winner after a second-hole tiebreaker over Adam Gornikiewicz, Joe Michalski and Paul Olkowski. In the C Flight, Dennis Gawronski Sr. was the winner after a first-hole tiebreaker over Ron Szach. In the D Flight, Gary Richardson was the winner after a second-hole tiebreaker over Jim Hofer and Mike Willoughby. The winner of the weekly Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was John Tofil.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Allen (No. 3), Bob Manning (No. 4), Mick Dunning Sr. (Nos. 6, 10), Joe Tramuta (No. 8), Wolfe (Nos. 14, 17), Jason Habich (No. 15) and Ed Tofil (No. 18); B Flight — Kevin Voss (No. 1), Gornikiewicz (No. 2), Butch Mackowiak (No. 4), John Bongiovanni Jr. (No. 5), Waterman (No. 12) and Michalski (No. 14); C Flight — Tony Destro (No. 2), Mike Guziec Sr. (Nos. 4, 14), Szach (No. 6), Pat Weaver (Nos. 7, 9), Joe Bifaro (No. 8), Bob Welch (No. 10), Dave Franklin (No. 11) and Gawronski (No. 15); D Flight — Don Kujawa (No. 3), Tim Walawender (No. 5), Richardson (No. 11), Bob Kujawa (No. 12) and Jack Hood (No. 18).

Closest to the pin were Mackowiak (Nos. 4, 6), Robert Calph (No. 8), Waterman (No. 12; 13 inches from the cup) and Manning (No.15).

Winners of the par-3 contest were: A Flight — Manning (-1); B Flight — Waterman (+1); C Flight — Rich Hofer (+4); and D Flight — Willoughby (+2).

The winning team in the Browns Ball contest was Stoughton, Criscione, Gawronski and Lenny Leszkowicz with a score of 85.

Top point winners were Mackowiak (115 — the most in the league this season), Waterman (109), Manning (93) and Dunning and Guziec (78 apiece). Season points leaders: 1. Dave Wallace (282), 2. Calph (274), 3. Mackowiak (267), 4. Gary Haase (232), 5. Wolfe (230), 6. Tom Destro (220), 7. John Tofil (199), 8. Weaver (192), 9. Stoughton and Willoughby (186 each).
