Olean’s DeRose comes out of prequarterfinals to qualify for sectionals
LAKEWOOD — Olean’s Caroline DeRose is taking the road less traveled to the Section VI girls tennis championships.
DeRose pulled off the lone quarterfinal upset Thursday at the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association championships at the Lakewood Family YMCA. After beating Salamanca’s Maeghan Collins, 10-3, in the prequarterfinals, DeRose took down Frewsburg’s Elise Sposato, 6-0, 7-5, in the quarterfinals to lock up one of the CCAA’s four spots at sectionals, which will be held next Friday and Saturday at the Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville.
The CCAA’s other three representatives all had byes into the quarterfinals and won in straight sets. Fredonia’s Bernie Gens beat Maple Grove’s Ryann Hayes, 6-0, 6-0; Jamestown’s CeCe Eklum topped Maple Grove’s Emma Collins, 6-2, 6-1; and Chautauqua Lake’s Emily Bauer downed Falconer’s Lauren Allen, 6-4, 6-2.
The four semifinalists will play Saturday afternoon back at the Lakewood Family YMCA to determine the CCAA champion. Gens is the two-time defending champion and defeated Bauer in last year’s semifinals.
The Red Dragons’ Hayes reached the quarterfinals by beating Southwestern’s Erika Pickard, 10-4 in the prequarterfinals. Collins advanced with a 10-0 win over Olean’s Hannah Nelson while Allen moved on with a 10-5 defeat of Jamestown’s Madison Smith.
The CCAA’s best doubles teams will take the courts today beginning at noon to determine their sectional representatives.
All of the semifinals and finals will be played Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
