Wolfe captures Frank Borowski Invitational

AKRON — The Wednesday Travel League held its fourth major of the season, the Frank Borowski Invitational, honoring league founder Frank Borowski at The Links at Ivy Ridge in Akron. It also marked the 600th official event since records began in 2001.

Mike Wolfe and Wayne Stoughton each shot a new league course record 75, beating the old mark of 77 held by both Dave Mathews and Robert Calph. Wolfe was the overall winner by making birdie on the top handicap hole (No. 6) to win his second straight major. Wolfe dominated the day with five birdies and a league season-high 117 points, vaulting him into first place overall on the season. Calph finished third, matching his previous record 77, and Dave Criscione was fourth with 80. Wolfe, Stoughton and Calph all shot 40 to lead the front nine, while Wolfe, Stoughton and Criscione all shot 1-under par 35s to lead the back nine. Other flight winners were Bob Thompson (B), Pat Weaver (C) and Gary Richardson (D). The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Lenny Leszkowicz.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Calph (No. 1), John Bongiovanni Jr. (No. 5), Wolfe (Nos. 6, 8, 15), Criscione (Nos. 10, 14), Joe Jusko (No. 11) and Stoughton (No. 12); B Flight — Thompson (Nos. 6, 12, 17), Jeff Rich (Nos. 7, 13), John Tofil (Nos. 8, 10), Joe Bifaro (No. 9) and Bill Aldrich (No. 18); C Flight — Dave Momberger (Nos. 1, 17), Jack Hood (Nos. 3, eagle No. 15), Dave Franklin (No. 5), Weaver (Nos. 9, 18), Larry Klajbor (No. 10) and Joe Woloszyn (No. 13); D Flight — Tim Walawender (No. 3), John Waterman (No. 9) and Gary Haase (Nos. 12, 14).

Closest to the pin were Jeff Marsowicz (No. 5), Tofil (No. 8), Criscione (No. 12) and Wolfe (No. 15).

Winners of the par-3 contest were: A Flight — Wolfe (-2); B Flight — Tom Destro (+2); C Flight — Hood (+3); D Flight — Haase (+1).

Winners of the most “Sixes” contest were: A Flight — Jusko and Marsowicz (3); B Flight — Aldrich and Bifaro (7); C Flight — Weaver and Ron Szach (7); D Flight — Walawender (8).

Top point winners were Wolfe (117), Tofil (69), Criscione (41), and Stoughton, Bongiovanni and Hood (40 apiece). Season points leaders: 1. Wolfe (374), 2. Calph (299), 3. Haase (294), 4. Dave Wallace (292), 5. Tofil (286), 6. Butch Mackowiak (277), 7. Weaver (263), 8. Waterman (244), 9. Destro (233), 10. Criscione (231).

Milestones hit this week: Gary Haase and Mike Wolfe both went over 2,000 career points and now rank 17th and 18th on the All-Time Points List, respectively. Bill Aldrich went over 1,000 career points. Jack Hood’s eagle-3 on the par-5 third hole was his first eagle in league play.
