Fredonia takes advantage of free throws in victory

The Fredonia Hillbillies (1-1) opened up at home with a 54-40 victory over the Allegany-Limestone Gators (1-1) in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West girls basketball Tuesday.

It was a slow start for both teams. In fact, the score at halftime was only 17-14 in favor of Fredonia.

The storyline changed after the break when both teams doubled their first-half performances in the third quarter alone. For Fredonia, the scoring surge was sparked by senior captain Samantha Tabone who found her scoring touch with 7 points in the third quarter. She then hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to finish with a team-high 14 points.

Sarah Davis also had a solid game with a 15 points of her own. Davis was an impressive 5 of 8 from the free throw line.

Davis was not the only player to perform from the line as Fredonia was 18 of 26 as a team.

This was the difference in the game as the Gators were just 5 of 17 from the free throw line.

“It really was a coach’s dream to shoot that well as a team from the line,” said Fredonia head coach Dan Vona.

Senior Maddy Marsh contributed 14 points of her own while running the offense from the point guard position.

Vona was pleased with the girls’ effort overall and said they will continue to really focus on defense going forward.

The Gators were led by Devin Ralston’s 11 points. Unfortunately for the Gators, as Ralston started to heat up from the floor, she also found herself in foul trouble. She eventually fouled out of the game which ended any real chance the Gators had to get back into the game.

Senior Marissa Cash was a major factor on the boards and defensively in the paint for the Hillbillies after not playing basketball for two years.

Vona also commented on junior Abigail Wray’s on-the-ball defense.
