Dunkirk comes up short at Salamanca

SALAMANCA — Dunkirk let one slip away late.

The Marauders led Salamanca 31-25 at halftime and 44-41 after three quarters, but came up one shot short in the end.

The Warriors led 61-59 as Dunkirk inbounded with nine seconds remaining. The Marauders got the potential tying shot off, but it glanced off the rim for a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West loss.

“The kids from Dunkirk played their hearts out,” Dunkirk head coach Luke Gullo said. “It was a fun, fun game to coach.”

Carlito Villafane led Dunkirk with 22 points, including six 3-pointers, while Donovan Lockett added four 3-pointers for 12 points.

“We always knew Carlito was a great shooter. We are finding ways to get him involved and he responded today. We lost our point guard, Marcel Carter, to a season-ending injury last game and Carlito picked it up today,” Gullo said. “Donny played like an absolute senior leader like we need him to be. He was tremendous.”

Villafane and Lockett combined to go 10 for 16 on 3-point attempts.

Christian Ortiz added 13 points and 11 rebounds while Tim Brown grabbed seven rebounds for the Marauders (1-3, 0-3).

Salamanca outscored Dunkirk, 20-15, in the fourth quarter to rally for the win.

“It was just a matter of having people in foul trouble,” Gullo said. “They beat us up at the foul line.”

Lucas Brown led the Warriors (1-3, 1-2) with 25 points to go along with eight rebounds while Jarod White added 16 points and 10 rebounds.

“It’s nice to see our kids get rewarded with the win. We’ve played very hard and our focus has been continuing to improve in this tough league,” Salamanca head coach Adam Bennett said. “We weren’t perfect, but we did some nice things in the second half to get the job done.”
