Six JCC women earn all-region honors
JAMESTOWN — It continues to be a memorable season for the Jamestown Community College women’s swimming & diving team, having six student-athletes make both the First- and Second-Team All-Region teams.
“These kids have worked hard and sacrificed so much, both in the pool and personally,” said head coach Todd Conklin. “I couldn’t ask for a better group to coach and am happy they have been recognized by being named to the First- and Second-Team All-Region teams this year.”
The Jayhawks, who were named the NJCAA Region 3 champions last weekend, filled 13 First-Team All-Region slots with freshman Tia Moppert (Gowanda/Gowanda Central School) leading the way with six honors.
Moppert had the best time in the region in two individual events, posting a time of 2:16.67 in the 200-yard freestyle and a new school record in the 100-yard butterfly, posting a time of 1:08.35. Moppert was also named to the Second-Team All-Region team in three events including the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.89), 100-yard backstroke (1:12.32) and 100-yard individual medley (1:11.29). During the season, Moppert was named NJCAA Region 3 Player of the Week for the week of March 15-21.
Sophomore Karianne Yuchnitz (Panama/Panama Central School) collected a total of five First-Team All-Region honors including two individual events. Yuchnitz posted the fasted times in the 50-yard freestyle with 24.80 and in the 100-yard freestyle with 55.38. The two times posted by Yuchnitz are new school records, which she broke three times during the season. As of now, Yuchnitz is fourth in the country in the 50-yard freestyle. Yuchnitz was also named to the Second-Team All-Region team in one event, posting a time of 1:08.71 in the 100-yard butterfly. Yuchnitz was also named NJCAA Region 3 Player of the Week three times this season.
Freshman Anna Burt (Jamestown/Jamestown High School) also collected five First-Team All-Region honors including one individual event. Burt posted a time of 34.47 in the 50-yard backstroke. Burt was also name to the Second-Team All-Region in one event, posting a time of 2:43.84 in the 200-yard backstroke.
Sophomore Lillian Baer (Jamestown/Maple Grove Junior-Senior High School) swam her way onto four First-Team All-Region teams, with two being individual events. Baer posted times of 1:24.93 in the 100-yard breaststroke and 3:04.39 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Baer was also named to the Second Team All-Region team, posting a time of 40.27 in the 50-yard breaststroke.
Freshman Jade Vidas (Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa/Parktown High School for Girls) was had three First-Team All-Region team honors, including one individual event. Vidas posted a time of 1:10.65 in the 100-yard individual medley, a new school record. Vidas was also named to the Second-Team All-Region team in the 200-yard individual medley, posting a time of 2:38.39.
Freshman Megan Stang (Perrysburg/Gowanda Central School) was named to the Second-Team All-Region team in four events including the 500-yard freestyle (6:41.96), 1,000-yard freestyle (13:44.65), 1,650-yard freestyle (23:20.01) and 200-yard breaststroke (3:06.88).
The Jayhawks also showed their strength in the relays, sweeping all four of the First-Team All-Region honors. The team of Moppert, Yuchnitz, Burt and Vidas posted times of 1:52.17 in the 200-yard freestyle relay and 4:11.09 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
The team of Burt, Stang, Moppert and Baer posted a time of 2:12.97 in the 200-yard medley relay while the team of Burt, Baer, Moppert and Yuchnitz posted a time of 4:44.77 in the 400-yard medley relay, a new school record.
“We are looking forward to a great national swim meet,” Conklin said. “We still have some great swims ahead of us and we can’t wait.”
The Jayhawks will look to carry over their success from this season as they travel to Fort Pierce, Florida, for the 2021 NJCAA Swimming & Diving Championships on April 28.
